Efficient Isolation and Aerosol Control With DryShield

Aug 8 • 3 minute read

Dental isolation techniques have remained largely unchanged, relying heavily on traditional methods, such as rubber dams. These methods, while effective, often posed challenges in terms of patient comfort, ease of use, and procedural efficiency. However, the advent of DryShield (Solmetex) has revolutionized dental isolation by providing a more advanced, user-friendly, and effective solution.

With 27 years of practice in San Diego, I have integrated the DryShield isolation system into my dental practice over the past decade. This innovation has significantly enhanced the efficiency and quality of my procedures, addressing the limitations of conventional isolation methods.

DryShield is an all-in-one isolation system that performs all the tasks of a high-suction evacuator, bite block, tongue shield, and oral pathway protector in one easy-to-use device (Figure 1). It keeps the work environment dry and clean, allows for 2-quadrant dentistry, increases visibility, and can be installed in seconds (Figures 2 and 3).

Initial Impressions and Implementation

Initially, I was concerned about the acceptance of DryShield by my team and patients. These concerns, however, were quickly dispelled. The device is simple to place, taking only seconds, and patients appreciate the benefits once we explain how it enhances their comfort and the procedure’s outcome.

Figure 1. DryShield (Solmetex) provides clinicians with isolation that maximizes ease, comfort, safety, and productivity.

We use DryShield in nearly all procedures, including composite fillings, crown preps, CAD/CAM cases, and implant procedures. The hygienists also utilize it during scaling and root planing to keep the patient’s mouth open, allow for greater suction, and reduce discomfort.

Practical Application

Setting up DryShield is straightforward. Each operatory is equipped with it, and we reference patient charts to determine the appropriate mouthpiece size. For new patients, we size them up during the initial visit. We explain to patients how DryShield will help their mouths stay open, prevent debris from falling down their throats, and suction saliva, ensuring a more comfortable and efficient procedure. One procedure, specifically, in which DryShield is indispensable involves implants. The device prevents small parts from dislodging and falling down the patient’s throat and suctions water generated by the implant drill.

Figure 2. DryShield keeps a patient’s cheek retracted to improve visibility and allows for 2-quadrant dentistry.

DryShield offers numerous benefits, such as excellent isolation during bonding procedures, leading to increased bond strength and reduced sensitivity. It minimizes aerosols, which is critical for both patient and practitioner safety. Additionally, it allows patients to bite down, providing greater comfort during lengthy procedures.

Efficiency and Workflow Integration

Integrating DryShield into our workflow was seamless and has made us more efficient by reducing interruptions and expediting procedures. For instance, during CAD/CAM dentistry, it helps maintain a dry field, simplifying the scanning process. My team and I no longer struggle with patient tongues or excessive saliva, and patients appreciate the quicker, more comfortable treatment.

Patients have responded positively, requesting DryShield for its comfort and ability to keep their mouths free of unpleasant tastes. My dental assistants find their tasks easier, as DryShield handles retraction and maintains a dry field, allowing us to work more precisely and efficiently.

For practitioners new to DryShield, I recommend practicing placement on each other to ensure a smooth process with patients. Proper sizing is essential, and using the largest comfortable size enhances isolation.

DryShield has revolutionized our approach to dental procedures, offers unparalleled isolation, improves patient comfort, and boosts our practice’s efficiency. Maintenance is straightforward, with mouthpieces easily sterilized and tracked. Overall, DryShield is a valuable investment that pays for itself through increased procedural efficiency and enhanced patient care. I highly recommend it to any dental professional looking to elevate his or her practice.
